Die cutting is a process in which a metal die is pressed into the target material to cut it into a predetermined shape or size. Water jet cutting is similar but cuts material through a jet of highly pressurized water. Both of these processes transform sheet or roll stock into custom parts.
At Thomas A. Caserta, Inc., we provide custom die cutting and water jet cutting services tailored to the needs of each client. We produce high quality parts, either in large volumes or as prototypes, with quick lead times and tight tolerances. A range of diverse industries uses our customized rubber products.
How Do Die and Water Jet Cutting Work?
Water jet cutting and die cutting are both unique manufacturing processes since they provide a uniformity threshold in the finalized product that is unlike other cutting operations.
What makes these two processes so different? In the case of water jet cutting, there is no direct stress or heat that operators apply to the target material. Additionally, water jet cutting allows for the formation of smooth edges in the workpiece, so secondary finishing operations are not required.
In the die cutting process, a die press pushes a tough, metal die against the workpiece. The die cuts the workpiece according to the shape outlined by the die. The remaining product is removed from the press, and any excess material is discarded.
The water jet cutting process is similar but does not use a solid die press. Instead, a stream of water pressurized to about 40,000 lb. is induced through a jewel, or nozzle, with a roughly 4 mm orifice.
The advantages of using water jet cutters include:
- High accuracy
- Minimal waste
- Cost-effectiveness
- Fast setup times
- Precision or near-net-shape cutting (no edge concavity)
